Helen Martin, a survivor of domestic abuse, who served 13 years of a fifty year sentence for conspiring to kill
her abusive husband. She was granted clemency in 1994 by then Governor John Ashcroft of Missouri.
Voices Set Free
Louise Bauschard wrote a book with Mary Kimbrough titled Voices Set Free: Battered Women Speak
From Prison. It was dedicated to Helen in 1986, and inspired the organization of Voices Set Free.

All women are survivors of domestic violence sentenced to prison for killing their intimate partners to
save their lives and the lives of their children. They will speak of their experiences, past and present.
Tina Riggs, University of Illinois Graduate Student
Will be sharing her research on the personality profiles of incarcerated women, specifically those who have
killed their abusive spouses.
We will also be sharing the opportunities for activism in relation to helping those women who are currently
incarcerated for killing an abusive intimate partner.
